The Veil of Ignorance

Designing society without knowing who you will be.

[Gentle] You stand before a shimmering curtain of light. This is the Veil of Ignorance. Behind you is nothingness. Ahead lies the world you will soon enter. But there's a condition: you don't yet know who you'll be in this world. You might be born into wealth or poverty, privilege or hardship. Any nationality, any gender, any ability level, any circumstance. The only certainty is uncertainty. You approach the Veil and notice a large book on a pedestal. Its pages are blank, waiting for your hand. This is the Book of Rules—the principles that will govern the society you're about to enter. Since you don't know your future position, you must design these rules without knowing which side of them you'll experience. Take a moment to feel the weight of this responsibility. Every word you write might someday protect you—or restrict you. Your decisions now will shape the fundamental structures of fairness in this new world. First, consider resources.
