Sisu

English has words for starting strong. Determination. Drive. Grit. Resilience. The language is well-stocked for the beginning and middle of hard things. For the moment when you decide to try. For the stretch where it is difficult but you can still see the other side. Even resilience — the word most explicitly about endurance — carries within it an image of springing back. You bend, and then you return. The shape of the word implies recovery. But there is a different situation. The situation where you have already passed the point where a reasonable person would stop. Where there is no optimism left, and no recovery in sight, and you continue anyway — not because you believe it will work out, and not because you have found some reserve of hope, but because stopping would be a different kind of wrong. English reaches for this and finds nothing. The gap is not small. It is the gap at the far edge of everything you have. Finns call it sisu.
