The Silence After Your Name

What happens in the body in the instant someone says your name and you haven't yet heard why.

[Gentle] I invite you to notice something that happens dozens of times throughout your life - that moment when someone says your name unexpectedly. Right now, see if you can bring your attention to that distinct internal state that arises when your name cuts through whatever you're doing. Notice what happens in your body and mind in that brief moment after hearing your name. You're walking through a crowd, or sitting in a meeting, or standing in line somewhere. Suddenly, your name floats above the ambient noise. Notice how your attention snaps to alert before you've even located who said it. There's a brief silence that follows - a gap between hearing your name and what comes next. That's what we're exploring today. This silence has a location in your body. Perhaps it's a sudden stillness in your chest, or a tightening across your shoulders. Maybe it's a flush of warmth in your face, or a subtle bracing in your jaw.
